Eastman’s Corporate Business Center (CBC) in Kingsport, Tennessee, officially opened in March 2016. As part of Eastman’s corporate campus, the CBC’s open office design is a welcoming space that invites collaboration and innovation among employees, customers, contractors and vendors. When building the global headquarters, Eastman’s vision was to use finishes and systems that were not only extremely functional but aesthetically pleasing and would complement the existing Eastman campus and its beautiful mountain surroundings. In addition, Eastman wanted to use materials that used its products in the construction to showcase to stakeholders — shareholders, customers, employees and the community — the benefits of the many world-leading products that Eastman produces.
With up to 1,000 employees and countless visitors venturing into the new headquarters daily, Eastman knew the cafeteria would be an essential space within the new CBC. It not only needed to be an attractive centerpiece but the flooring needed to be able to withstand heavy foot traffic and continuous cleaning. The following Tarkett products were selected: Tandus Centiva Venue® Series Crisscross (Oslo, Raffia and Wisp), and Johnsonite® cove base. These materials are made using Eastman 168™ non-phthalate plasticizer, which yields durability and flexibility to the product, contain up to 30% recycled content and are 100% recyclable. This product selection not only gave Eastman’s CBC cafeteria the combination of aesthetics and performance they desired, but also reflects Tarkett and Eastman’s commitment to create healthy living spaces by providing safer and more sustainable flooring options.
“The flooring was a perfect fit for the vision of the cafeteria,” remarked CBC Project Manager Mike Pappas. “It has helped give Eastman’s CBC cafeteria the combination of aesthetics and performance desired and has more than met our expectations for the space and function.”
Eastman is currently in the LEED certification process and is expected to obtain Silver status with the ambition of achieving Gold in the near future. By selecting a product that has a near nonexistent VOC level and is recyclable, the cafeteria flooring provided another stepping stone for Eastman to reach LEED certification.
“By offering a sustainable product that is durable, clean, and modern, the flooring has provided a solid foundation for our Eastman family to stand upon while keeping our building as green as possible,” said Steve Cullen, Plasticizers’ Business Unit Director, Eastman Chemical Company.
